Sugar-Free Creations

My father was a Type 1 Diabetic and was very conscientious about his diet. He would occasionally have insulin reactions and need to go to the hospital. My family imprinted on me from the age of six that if Daddy had a a low blood-sugar incident or was acting strange, to bring him some candy or an apple and dial 911. I took this job very seriously, as I adored my father and and would do anything for him. I always loved sugar - candy, cookies, cake, ice-cream - dessert was the best part of the day. So my father not being able to eat any desserts really distressed me. I felt terrible for him that he couldn't enjoy the food that I loved so much.

This is a photo of me making him a sourdough bread round with spray cheese decorations so that he could have a special treat for his birthday. Probably his 40th birthday, celebrated with some good grass from Oregon and an extra large jug of Ernest and Julio Gallo!
